The SpongeBob Musical offering Sensory Friendly Performances:
2:00PM Saturdays May 31 & June 7

Riverwalk Theatre is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. To make our productions more accessible to audience members who may find the traditional theatre experience overwhelming, we have made the following sensory adjustments to our Saturday afternoon performances of The SpongeBob Musical:
  • Lowered volume, dimmed lights and reduced strobe effects: Music and sound effects are toned down to avoid overwhelming or startling audience members. This can help reduce anxiety caused by loud noises. Bright stage lights are often softened, and the lighting throughout the space is kept at a lower level, avoiding sudden bright flashes that can be overstimulating. Flashing or strobe lights are eliminated.
  • Softened music transitions: Abrupt, jarring sound changes are minimized to create a smoother auditory experience.
  • Softened stage effects: Visual effects like fog or smoke, which can be intense or cause discomfort, would be reduced or eliminated.
  • No dark scenes: In some cases, total darkness or rapid scene changes that might cause anxiety are avoided, ensuring there is always some ambient light in the space.
  • Freedom to move: Patrons are encouraged to move around or leave the space if they need a break, rather than being required to remain seated throughout the performance.
  • Break areas: Designated spaces or quiet rooms will be available for anyone who feels overstimulated and needs a retreat during the show.
  • Relaxed behavior: The audience is encouraged to make noise, talk, or fidget if needed, without fear of disrupting the show. This allows for a more comfortable environment for those who might find it hard to sit still or stay silent.
  • There will be some fidget toys and noise dampening, youth size earmuffs available for checkout, but we welcome patrons to bring their own as well.
  • Intermission will include voluntary 10 minutes of guided stretching and movement for those of us who struggle with sitting for extended periods of time.
