A Staged Reading of

Happy Birthday, You're Being Deported

May 20

By Phil Kline
Directed by Addiann Hinds

Irma Valentine, wife of a soldier during the Viet Nam  War, turns twenty years old the day she is told she will be deported to an Asian country by the Immigration Service of the United States Government. She has done nothing wrong, and has abided by all the regulations pertaining to entry.
An action taken by the army of the country her husband has been willing
to die for, is the culprit.

Enforcing federal law, immigration authorities are deporting her to the Island of Okinawa, south of Japan. A former citizen of Mexico and resident alien of the United States, she is to be sent back to Okinawa a year after she received official orders from the Defense Department allowing her to join her husband who was stationed there.

As an illegal alien, she has no rights to consul, visitors, or even to communicate with her husband who is told of her plight by  immigration authorities. He is advised by the military authorities to proceed to his new station, and from there, apply to the court system in the hopes he will get
a federal judge who will rule in his favor and return his wife to him.

Director: Tom Ferris

Based on the Newbery Honor Book by Audrey Couloumbis,
“Getting Near to Baby” deals with the breadth of children’s loss, grief
and capacity to overcome tragedy with so much humor, wisdom and sensitivity that nothing but good conversation can come of any adult and child viewing it together.  Set in a small town in 1967, the play is a reminder of the amazing resilience of children and the power of family.
