Get ready to rock! Jesus Christ Superstar, a bold, high-voltage production fueled by raw rock, gritty punk, and deep funk is holding auditions this December. This reimagining centers on obsession—and the danger that comes when that obsession is betrayed. We are seeking a diverse, gender-neutral cast of 18–22 performers, including 9 named roles and an intense, expressive ensemble. All identities, vocal types, and performance styles are encouraged to audition.

We are looking for a principal cast of 9 actors and between 11-13 ensemble members to fill out the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar! Please note that the descriptions below are intended to give auditioners a general idea of what the casting team is looking for, but that all individuals will be considered. The team is looking for a cast that spans a diversity of racial, age, and gender identities, and as such casting for all roles will be “blind” with no regard for how an actor presents.
When:
Open auditions will be held Sunday, December 7, and Monday, December 8, both at 7:00 pm in Riverwalk Theatre’s Rehearsal Hall. While walk-ins will be accepted, the casting team would prefer that all auditioners fill out the following quick survey to indicate your interest and schedule your audition time:

Callbacks will be taking place on an invitation-only basis on Tuesday, December 9
What to Prepare:
Music: Auditioners are asked to please prepare a song approximately 32 bars (or roughly 1 - 1.5 minutes) in length. An accompanist will be available if needed (please remember your sheet music), or we will also have a bluetooth speaker to use if you prefer a karaoke track.
Dance: Open auditions will also involve learning and performing a short dance combo, to be taught the night of auditions. The dance section will be held from 8:00pm - 9:00pm. For those who are not able to sign up early, you will need to attend this section, and we will hear you at the end of auditions. Please wear comfortable footwear.
Performances and Rehearsal Information:
Performances for Jesus Christ Superstar will be February 26 - March 1 and March 5 - 8, 2025. In general, rehearsals will take place from 7:00pm - 10:00pm Sunday - Wednesday with dance rehearsals on Saturday mornings, with time off for the holidays.
Character Descriptions
JESUS
A spiritual leader with a strong sense of purpose, but increasingly burdened by doubt, fear, and the weight of expectations. Jesus must command the stage with quiet intensity and emotional depth.
JUDAS
A close follower of Jesus, deeply passionate and conflicted. Torn between loyalty and disillusionment, Judas drives the story with explosive energy and urgency. Strong rock vocals and emotional intensity required.
MARY MAGDALENE
A devoted follower of Jesus who offers compassion and emotional support. Grounded and gentle, yet capable of great strength.
PILATE
A Roman governor caught between duty and conscience. Pilate is a complex figure who shows control, hesitation, and ultimately desperation. This role blends power with inner turmoil.
HEROD
A flamboyant and mocking ruler who treats Jesus as a sideshow. Herod is comedic, flashy, and theatrical, as campy as can be. This is a standout character role with room for big personality and style.
CAIAPHAS
The high priest in Jerusalem of strong authority, determined to preserve the status quo. Calm, calculating, and commanding, this role anchors the opposition to Jesus.
ANNAS
Another high priest and advisor to Caiaphas. Slick, persuasive, and often sarcastic. Works behind the scenes to influence outcomes.
PETER
One of Jesus’s closest followers who struggles with the need to be the best disciple. Peter is loyal but humanly flawed.
SIMON ZEALOTES
A fervent supporter of Jesus who urges political and militaristic revolution. Believes that the Romans must be destroyed and driven from Israel. Energetic, passionate, and bold. A dynamic role with strong physical presence.
ENSEMBLE
Various followers, priests, soldiers, and citizens. The ensemble plays a vital role in storytelling and mood, often with featured vocal and dance moments.
